Bioaccumulation & Biodiversity
"Why do the birds of prey disappear? Bioaccumulation and its consequences on biodiversity

One day training project involving pupils (C' - F' Form) and students (High school).

Aims

For pupils / students:

  • To understand the phenomenon of bioaccumulation and how this can have a negative effect on (reduction of) biodiversity.
  • To identify biodiversity in their area, as well as species that are vulnerable to pollution by way of bioaccumulation.
  • To be able to discuss the consequences on their own health.

Structure of the project

A) Use of photographs, drawings and cartoons to mobilize the interest of the children in learning basic concepts and encourage them to activities and discussion.

B) Table game to familiarize pupils/students with the eco-system of Mt. Youchtas and the rules they should observe as visitors to a protected area.

C) Field work on Mt. Youchtas where the pupils/students identify various species of the flora and fauna in the protected area, compare notes on the biodiversity of the mountain and that in the fields at the foot of the mountain. They draw food chains starting from the crops/plants and up to the top of the chain comprising birds of prey and mammals. At the same time the pupils identify and register non-biodegradable refuse they come across.

D) Discussion with the pupils/students about their habits and how these habits may worsen pollution. The discussion also involves proposed solutions.
