"Let's take .... an alternative tour"

One- or two-day training project for pupils (primary education) and students (High school and Lyceum).

54o Δημοτικό Σχολείο

Aims

For pupils/students:

  • To familiarize themselves with the model of mass tourism and its consequences on the natural and social environment.
  • To learn about alternative forms of tourism and understand the value of sustainable tourism development.
  • To sensitize them in issues concerning the protection of biodiversity and the management of protected areas.
  • To foster in children and cultivate in them an attitude to tourism that is environmentally friendly, with the children envisioning themselves either as tourists or as residents of the area or even as future investors.

Structure of the program

1st day

A) Presentation and activities introducing the subject matter.

B) Field work in the area of "Ano" Archanes. The pupils/students are organized into groups for a treasure hunt which aims to promote the experience of alternative tourism. The children discover the town of Archanes by taking photographs, and develop such skills as reading maps and practice orientation. Also, they are encouraged to make contacts with the local population and collect information about important landmarks in the town.

C) Presentation of Group work. This takes place upon the return of the children and their instructors to the CEEA. Each group exhibits their photographs and share their newly acquired knowledge and experiences. The project wraps up with an evaluation of mass tourism and the alternative forms of tourism considered.

2nd day

D) Field Work on Mt. Youchtas: the pupils/students walk on the mountain trails and are encouraged to identify, in groups, the biodiversity of the mountain. They experience ecotourism; they design footpaths, make suggestions for soft interventions and learn the rules applying to visitors to protected areas.

E) Group Work presentation: the project wraps up with the display of photographs taken by the groups and the description of the footpath by the rest of the groups.

"Let's play after the traces of the little Minoan ..."

This is a training project for children in the kindergarten, and in A'-B' Form Elementary School.

Aims

For pupils

  • To familiarize themselves with mass tourism.
  • To learn about and experience alternative forms of tourism
  • To foster in them an approach to tourism that is environmentally friendly.

Structure of the project

A) In-class presentation: the concept of mass tourism is discussed and analyzed through the eyes of a child tourist staying in a hotel with his/her family (slides). In addition, there is a brief presentation of the traditional sector of Archanes and the way the locals lived from the Minoan times to the present.

B) Field work: this involves orientation in the traditional sector of Archanes through a play called "Let's play after the traces of the little Minoan ..." In this game the pupils imitate the daily activities of the locals from ancient times to the present, even games which have survived through the ages in various forms. They learn what it means to live in a traditional settlement, what a tourist is to expect and enjoy as an alternative form of mass tourism. Also, the pupils visit eco-tourism installations and, acting as little journalists, learn to gather information about the kinds of services these installations offer to tourists.

C) Presentation of Group Work: presentation of photographs taken during the pupils' activities; award of prizes to children for their participation in the outdoor games; artistic expression and discussion.
